Sagging Jowls - why do they happen and what can we do about them?

A surgical neck lift may be your first thought when considering sagging jowls, double chin(s), and loose skin on your neck (aka "turkey neck"). But like all things in the over 40 beauty world, the more you understand WHY something is happening, the more options become available for dealing with it.

In this week's blog, we'll discuss why we get sagging jowls over time, particularly in our 50s. We'll also cover the variety of things that contribute to sagging jowls in our chin, neck and jawline. Most importantly, you will learn the steps we can take to prevent, minimize, or reverse the loose skin on our neck.

This video is full of great advice and product recommendations so you do not want to miss out on one juicy morsel of this week's topic!

What Causes Sagging Jowls

Most people experience sagging of the skin in their neck and jawline in their 50s due to the loss of collagen and elastin. However, you can experience this phenomenon earlier in life due to several conditions.

Premature sagging can be caused by

Shronic dehydration
Chronic use of alcohol
Smoking tobacco products
Chronic lack of physical exercise
Diets that lack antioxidants and healthy fats
Habits or expressions that overuse the cheek, mouth and jaw muscles
Poor personal hygiene that damages skin health

Medical Procedures to Combat Sagging Jowls

Neck Lift
Dermal Fillers
Infrared Skin Tightening

Ways to Treat/Reduce Sagging Jowls at Home

Stay hydrated
Use Sunscreen
Use moisturizers, creams, & lotions high in antioxidants that promote the production of collagen, such as retinol, vitamin C, and vitamin E.
Chemical peels (can be done at home or at the dermatologist's office)
Avoid habits and expressions that cause the jaw and cheek muscles to face downward
Do facial exercises that promote flexible muscles in the entire face
Exercise regularly
Eat a healthy diet
Don't smoke
Sleep on your back instead of on your side or stomach
