What's Really Happening to Your Lips After 50 💋

My lips are wonky! Whenever I watch one of my TikTok videos, I cringe because my lips are extremely uneven. It looks like I put on my lipstick in the dark! And here I am on social media doing a tutorial on how to apply lip liner evenly! 🤦🏻‍♀️ UGH!

I've known about the vertical wrinkles we get around our lips as we age, but I didn't know that the loss of collagen (and a few other things) is also making our lips appear thinner and the edges less distinct. (Where did my cupid's bow go? 💘) And in some cases, creating asymmetry. 🙋🏻‍♀️

Have you looked in the mirror lately and thought, "Wait, when did my lips get so much smaller/lighter/thinner/wrinkly-er?" You're not imagining it, and you're definitely not alone.

So I figured it was high time we talked about it!

Why Our Lips Change So Much With Age

Why Lips Thin With Age
Why Lips Thin With Age

There's a real reason your lips look different than they did 20 years ago, and it comes down to a few things happening under the surface:

  • Collagen and elastin loss – this is the root cause behind almost everything else on this list. As we age, our body produces less of both, and lips are mostly made of soft tissue with no bone or cartilage to hold their shape, so they're one of the first places to show it.

  • Thinning and volume loss – less collagen means less structure, so lips gradually flatten and lose that plump, defined edge, especially along the cupid's bow.

  • Vertical lip lines (perioral lines) – these little "lipstick bleed" lines around the mouth form from repeated movement (talking, pursing, smiling) combined with lost elasticity.

  • Pigment loss – lips naturally lose color and definition with age, which is part of why they can look smaller even before you factor in volume loss. Losing that natural lip line border makes the whole lip look like it's fading into the surrounding skin.

  • Uneven lips – due to uneven volume loss, shifting teeth, and changes in facial muscle tone, lips can become asymmetrical. Mine have gotten this way, and it's incredibly obvious the second I put on a dark lipstick.

  • Dehydration – lips don't have oil glands, so they dry out faster than the rest of our face, and dryness makes every line more noticeable.

  • Sun damage – UV exposure breaks down collagen over time and is a major contributor to both lines and discoloration, which is exactly why lip products with SPF matter more than people think.

  • Habits that speed it up – smoking, drinking through straws, and even repetitive pursing all add to those vertical lines over time.

My lips have gotten so uneven that dark matte lipstick is no longer my friend. Soft, shimmery lipstick is my new go-to!

Hydration and Daily Habits That Help

Before we get to makeup and treatments, a few simple daily habits go a long way, since lips have no oil glands and dry out faster than the rest of your face.

  • Use a lip mask or overnight treatment. These give lips a deeper dose of hydration than a daily balm alone, and applying one before bed a few nights a week makes a noticeable difference in how smooth lips feel and look the next morning.

  • Switch to a lip balm with SPF. Sun exposure is one of the biggest drivers of both lip lines and discoloration, so a daily SPF balm is one of the easiest habits to build.

  • Exfoliate gently once or twice a week. A soft lip scrub (or even a soft toothbrush) sloughs off dry, flaky skin so your treatments and lipstick absorb and apply smoothly instead of sitting on top.

  • Try a lip serum with peptides or collagen boosters. For an everyday, lighter-weight option alongside a more targeted treatment, a lip serum can help support collagen production over time.

  • Drink enough water. Hydrating from the inside matters too. It won't fix lip lines on its own, but it supports everything else you're doing for your lips.

Spotlight: Dermelect Smooth Upper Lip & Perioral Anti-Aging Treatment

Dermelect Smooth Upper Lip & Perioral Anti-Aging Treatment
Dermelect Smooth Upper Lip & Perioral Anti-Aging Treatment

This is the product I want to spotlight this week because it's formulated specifically for this exact list of problems, not just the lips themselves, but the whole perioral area around the mouth.

It targets visible signs like vertical lip lines, laugh lines, upper lip discoloration, and lipstick feathering — often caused by everyday habits like sipping straws, snapping selfies, tanning, or waxing. Whether you’re filler-free or maintaining results, this targeted treatment helps preserve your pout’s smooth, youthful look.

  • Most anti-aging products are made for the face in general and just happen to get applied near the mouth. This one is built specifically for the upper lip and perioral area, targeting vertical lip lines, laugh lines, and the shadowy discoloration that shows up under the nose as we age.

  • It combines multi-peptides (including Matrixyl 3000) with hyaluronic acid filling spheres and a natural brightening ingredient called arbutin, so it's addressing lines, hydration, and pigment all in one step rather than needing three separate products. It's also positioned as a non-invasive option you can use alongside, or instead of, filler or injectables.

What I noticed:

The applicator seemed big at first, but I realized I didn't have to be precise with the application. It's for the entire perioral area. (But be careful not to get it directly on your lips). It feels very cooling and soothing, not at all like the tingling heat of a lip plumper. It absorbs quickly. Doesn't smell or taste weird. I found it very easy to incorporate it into my routine day and night!

Makeup Tricks That Actually Help

The effect of lip liner on mature lips

While treatments work on the skin itself, a few makeup adjustments make an immediate difference in how your lips look day to day.

  • Use a lip liner. Since we lose natural pigment at the edge of the lip, the border where lip meets skin gets less defined, which is a big part of why lips look smaller. A liner redraws that edge and can very subtly extend just past your natural line to restore some of that fullness.

  • Reach for soft, shimmery lipstick instead of dark, matte shades. Dark colors show every bit of unevenness in your natural lip tone, I know this firsthand. A softer shade with a little shimmer reflects light instead of drawing attention to the color variation.

  • Choose glossy over matte. Matte formulas tend to sit in the vertical lines and emphasize them. Glossy or satin finishes reflect light and soften the look of those same lines.

  • Use a lip primer. A primer creates a smoother base so color doesn't feather into the fine lines around your mouth, and it helps lipstick wear more evenly across a lip that isn't as smooth as it used to be.

  • Try a plumping lip product for an easy win. These come in two types: some use mild tingling ingredients like cinnamon or capsaicin to temporarily swell the lip, others use hyaluronic acid to plump with hydration instead of irritation. If tingly formulas bother your lips, look for the hyaluronic acid version instead.

Glossy over matte, soft over dark. Small swaps, big difference in how put-together your lips look.

The Bottom Line

Our lips change for real, physical reasons: less collagen, less pigment, more sun exposure over the years, and none of that is anything to feel bad about.

The good news is there's a lot you can do about it, from daily habits like a hydrating mask and SPF balm, to an easy win like a plumping product, to a targeted treatment like the Dermelect Smooth Upper Lip formula, to simple swaps in your makeup bag like liner, gloss, and softer colors.
