🫐 Berry Beautiful: a Makeup Series for Women Over 50
Welcome to week 1 of our 6-week Summer Makeover Series, especially for women over 50 who are ready to refresh their look with confidence, color, and just the right amount of flair. Each week, we’ll walk through a simple, flattering makeover featuring a curated color story that suits mature skin beautifully.
This week’s look is all about deep berry tones, perfect for those with cool undertones or anyone who loves the richness of plums, wine shades, and juicy berries. We’ll be using two complementary eye shadows, eyeliner, blush, lip liner, and lipstick—all in that elegant berry family—to create a polished everyday look that can easily be dialed up for evening.
And the best part? The method is straightforward and adaptable—no complicated techniques or harsh lines here. Just wearable, real-world beauty that helps you feel your best.
Not sure if you’re cool-toned? Check out my recent blog post on how to determine your undertone before we begin.

✨ Products We’re Using:
Here’s a list of the products I used for this look, including the actual shade names in parentheses. All products demoed are from Mary Kay:
2 Eye Shadows - one dusty rose shimmer, one matte wine (Chroafusion eye shadow in Sunlit Rose and Merlot)
Eye Liner - black (Waterproof Black)
Blush - deep berry/wine (Wineberry)
Lip Liner - berry (Waterproof Berry)
Lipstick - berry red (Apple Berry)
These rich berry shades are perfect for bringing out your natural glow—without going over the top. This look can easily transition from daytime to evening, depending on how you layer the products.
🎨 Step-by-Step Tutorial:
Begin with skincare, foundation, concealer, and setting powder (not shown in video)
Using a dusty rose shimmer, apply all over the eyelids and up into the crease with an all-over eye shadow brush.
Add the matte wine shadow in the outer corner of each eye in a "C" shape with an eye smudger brush (small firm head).
Line upper lashline with black eye liner.
Using the same smudger brush, apply the matte wine shadow along the lower lashline.
Apply blush along your cheekbones, being careful not to get too close to your nose or too low on your face.
Outline your lips with berry lip liner, starting in the center of your upper lip to create a "V" along your Cupid's bow and using short strokes from the center of your lips to the outer corner. Begin on the lower lip by creating a small horizontal line in the center and then using the same technique as you did on the upper lip to bring the liner to the outer corners.
Apply berry lipstick
Finish with your favorite mascara and setting spray (not shown in video).

💬 My Thoughts on This Week’s Look
Every time I sit down to create a new tutorial, I like to take a moment to reflect on how the colors, techniques, and overall feel of the look come together—especially through the lens of beauty over 50. Here are a few things that stood out to me as I worked with this week’s berry-inspired palette:
I rarely (if ever) skip a highlight shade but this look uses only a midtone and an accent. I notice that lots of looks created by makeup artists skip the highlight. I don't mind it, but I'm not sure if I would skip it every day. What do you think?
Once I reached 50, I stayed away from deep and bright lipsticks but I love how Apple Berry looks on me! I think it will look especially great when I go back to my gray hair (eventually).
Notice that the black liner is only used along the top lashline. We still have to be mindful of where we apply a dark liner if we want our eyes to look lifted.

💡 Wrap-Up:
That’s it for Part 1 of our Summer Makeover Series! This cool-toned makeover is proof that bold color doesn’t have to be intimidating—it just has to be strategic. With the right placement and the right undertone, berry shades can brighten your face, enhance your eyes, and bring fresh life to your makeup routine.
